Description

From the end of Sarra reservoir (1140 m) there is a wide path between pasture land and some forest which ascends gently in a northerly direction. It is signposted GR 11 long distance footpath and leads up to Respomuso refuge. This path takes us across several ravines and reaches a signposted fork (crossing with route 01): to the right the main GR 11 path heading towards the refuge; and to the left a route signposted towards Cuello de Soba and Arriel peaks. We leave the GR and take the second option along a marked path which takes us up firstly through forest and then through meadows on a steep climb towards Mallata dera Soba. We go up the climb and continue along the route upwards and seeking the best way through the rugged terrain. On the mountainsides before the pass the path becomes less obvious. We then follow the markings until we reach the summit of Cuello de Soba on the border (2444 m) (crossing with route 32).

On the French side the slope is equally steep and which we have to descend down to Lac d'Arrious (2280 m). Right on the north ridge two paths meet. A short walk down the left path would take us to Col d'Arriou. However, we take the right path leading to Orteig Pass, the most difficult part of the walk. It is a narrow overhanging ledge that crosses a vertical rock face. There is a rope fitted here, although some of the anchors are broken. It is not as difficult as it looks, although we do need to progress with caution and prudence, and in bad weather or if there is snow or ice, it can be rather exposed. Having crosses the path just a few minutes walk separate us from Arrémoulit refuge (2305 m).
